Who we are
At McQuixote Books & Coffee, we believe in love, acceptance, equality, diversity, social consciousness, and justice. We love our community and neighbors in Portland, Louisville, and surrounding West End friends. We stand with Black Lives Matter. We stand with our LGBTQIA community. We stand with women and those who identify as such. We stand with the poor and all those who have been pushed to the margins. We stand with the arts and artists. We aim to be a home for the faithful and for non-believers – knowing there is always a point of connection to find between us. We stand with science, journalists, and the quest for truth. We believe in the simple, basic premise that our world is better when we are all honored and able to live our lives to the fullest – and that it is everyone’s responsibility to foster a world where all can thrive.
We use the story of Don Quixote as a symbol to fight against the injustices of the world, to right the wrongs, to see the world not as it is, but as it should be. We use our book posts on social media not only to show our offerings, but more importantly to express our beliefs and to promote love and acceptance. We use our coffee house as a safe place to gather, share ideas, nurture creativity, lift up unique voices and perspectives, support local artists, and build community while providing the best quality food and drinks for our friends to enjoy. We thank you for all your support over the years and look forward to making the world a better place with you.
“When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!”
